Muccio, America’s ambas- sador to Korea, notifies the State Department that troops of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) have crossed the 38th parallel in force. President Harry S. Truman is notified of the invasion while at the summer White House in Independence, Missouri, and decides to return to Washington the next morning. At U.S. request, the UN Security Council identifies North Korea as breaking the peace, calls for the end ofall aggression, and orders the withdrawal of North Korean troops from South Korea. President Truman provides a press release assuring the American people that the American response is being conducted under international authority and will be limited to whatever military action is needed to protect the evacuation of American personnel. General Douglas MacArthur states that it is “probably only a reconnaissance in force.” At 1100 hours local time, North Korea announces the war. Sensing the crisis in Korea, American ambassador John Muccio communicates the Republic of Korea (South Korea) request for much- needed ammunition and air power. 浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com EIGHTH ARMY: At 0400 (Korea time) on a rainy morning, the military force of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea invades the Ongjin Peninsula of the Republic of Korea with 135,000 men. The invasion is preceded by heavy artillery and led by Soviet-made T-34 tanks. At the same time, North Korean troops land at Kangnung on the east coast and slightly south of the 38th parallel. By 0930, Kaesong, the ancient capital of Korea, becomes the first city to fall to the advancing troops. 浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com SEA WAR: At the time, all American naval vessels are located on southern and western coasts, but an ROK navy patrol craft (PC 701) under the command of Nam Choi Yong fires on and sinks an armed 1,000-ton North Korean freighter with about 600 troops on board. Major General Earle E. Far East Air Force cargo planes begin the evacuation of 700 U.S. State Department and Korean Military Advisory Group personnel and their families. Air Group Five under Commander H. P. Lanham arrives aboard the USS Valley Forge (CV 45). North Korean leader Kim Il Sung speaks to the North Korean people over radio, telling them they need to “liquidate” the menace identified as South Korea. |
