Error: "No dial tone" or "Line busy" when sending a fax or placing a voice call

Situation:

When you send a fax or place a voice call, you see the following message: "No dial tone," or "Line busy."

Solution:

Please test after each of the following:

Interrupted dial tones

If you subscribe to a telephone company's Call Answer service, the telephone line emits an intermittent or broken dial tone to notify you of messages. When this happens, the modem will be unable to detect a dial tone. You must disable the Detect Dial Tone feature or retrieve messages from the Call Answer service before attempting to dial.

In Program Setup, double-click Dialing and Locations.

On the General tab, uncheck Detect Busy Tone.

Uncheck Detect Dial Tone.

Click OK, then click Close.

Test using a regular telephone

Try plugging a regular telephone set into the same line as your modem.

If you do not hear a dial tone when you pick up the receiver, you may be experiencing a telephone line problem.

If you can hear a dial tone when you pick up the receiver, the problem may lie with your modem. Try using a different modem.

Use a dial prefix

Your phone service may require a dialing prefix such as 9, before a dial tone can be heard. This is common in offices using PBX systems, for example.

In Program Setup, double-click Dialing and Location. The Dialing Properties dialog box appears.

Select Locations.

Check Dial Prefix.

Select the correct dial prefix for the phone service from the drop-down list, or type in your own prefix.

Check for incorrect pulse dialing setting

Make sure WinFax/TalkWorks PRO is configured to use the proper dialing mode for your telephone line. Contact your telephone company if you are unsure which dialing method your telephone line uses. The pulse dialing setting should only be enabled if your telephone line uses pulse dialing.

In Program Setup, double-click Dialing and Locations.

On the Location tab, uncheck Pulse dial.

Click OK, and then click Close.

Disable the Detect Busy Tone setting

In some cases, the modem will detect a voice or a ringing signal as a busy tone, causing your modem to hang up the line before it attempts to send the fax. To prevent this, disable the detect busy tone setting in WinFax PRO/TalkWorks PRO.

In Program Setup, double-click Dialing and Locations.

On the General tab, uncheck Detect Busy Tone.

Click OK, and then click Close.

Set the modem to COM port mode

If the modem is set to use TAPI mode in WinFax PRO/TalkWorks PRO, try changing it to COM port mode instead.

In Program Setup, double-click Modems and Other Fax Devices. The Modems and Other Fax Devices dialog box appears.

Select the modem and click Properties.

Select the modem's COM port from the Communications Port drop-down list.

Create a new dialing location:

In Program Setup, double-click Dialing and Location.

Click the Locations tab.

Click New, type a name, make sure that the modem is selected, and then click OK.

Verify that all information on this screen is correct.

Click OK, and then click Close.

If you continue to experience problems you may find it helpful to disable Detect Dial Tone as described earlier.

Test in HyperTerminal:

Exit all open Communications programs.

Click Start, point to Programs, then to Accessories, and then click HyperTerminal. The HyperTerminal folder window appears.

Double-click HyperTerminal or Hypertrm.exe. The HyperTerminal window appears.

Type any name for the connection in the Name field of the Connection Description dialog box.

Click OK. The Phone Number dialog box appears.

Type any number in the Phone Number field.

Select the modem from the "Connect Using" drop-down list. The default selection will do in most cases.

Click OK. The Connect dialog box appears.

Click Cancel.

In the blank HyperTerminal window, type atz and then press Enter. The modem should respond with OK. If your modem does not respond at all, or does not respond with OK, it is not configured properly in Windows.

In the HyperTerminal window, type atdtXXXXX (where XXXXX is the phone number), and then press Enter.

NOTE: The refers to the entire dialing sequence of a number. If you need to dial a prefix, add it here as well. You should hear the modem pick up and dial the number. If you see a message indicating that there is no dial tone, then contact your phone company for assistance.

In the HyperTerminal window, type atz and then press Enter. You should see an OK response.

Exit HyperTerminal. There is no need to save the changes.
