The Bulgarian Paratrooper Unit

The first Bulgarian paratrooper unit was formed in 1943 as part of the Bulgarian Air force. The men came from the army - soldiers /age-group 1921/, officers and sergeants from the different branches of the army joined by competition.

The candidates, coming from different regiments from allover the country, in the summer of 1942 passed preliminary medical exams and came to the Vrazhdebna airfield /near the capital Sofia/ for psycho-, physical and sports tests, including tests in pressure chamber. The men that passed the tests - about 150 soldiers and the needed number of officers and sergeants, were sent to the Paratrooper /Fallschirmjager/ School in Braunschweig, Germany - this was the school appointed for training of the Bulgarian groups.

The first group was led by captain Lubomir Noev - former commander of a cavalry battery. For company commanders were appointed poruchyk /Lt./ Stanimir Stanimirov and poruchyk Svetoslav Iotzov. Platoon commanders: officer Emil Dumanov, sergeants Georgy Vankov, Atanas Kondov, Petko Yotov, Iskro Yovov, Atanas Kamensky, Andrey Iliev, Velyn Penchev and Nikola Stefanov.

The second group was lead by captain Georgy Alaikov and the officers poruchyk /Lt./ Georgy Markov, Tsocho Petrov, Boyan Bonchev, Konstantin Petrov, the sergeants Belcho Belchev, Dimitar Vargalov, Oscar Shtumf, Kolio Rusev, Dimitar Taslakov, Ilia Pandinov, Ilia Prodanov, Nikola Davidov.

The training was planned to be 3 months with at least 6 parachute jumps. The training was separated in groups of officers, sergeants and soldiers. The training was made by the German instructors from the Paratrooper school. The training included ground exercises of high difficulty, some lessons of aeronautic theory, exercises of preparing and adjusting the parachute, also some military training. For the ground training were used full size models of Ju-52 and He-111 aircraft. For the exercises for removing the parachute /after landing/ were used aircraft engines to create air flow.

The Bulgarians learned all very well, showed excellent results. Maybe this was the reason that not the German, but the Bulgarian paratrooper-students in the school were the first to make a jump from He-111 aircraft.

After finishing the program and making 6 jumps /4 from Ju-52 and 2 from He-111/, the Bulgarian paratroopers returned to Bulgaria. And in March 1943 was made the Paratrooper Battalion. Its commander became captain Lubomir Noev, the officers were the ones from the two groups trained in Germany. Captain Georgy Alaykov was sent on service in the HQ of the AF.

The age-group 1921 was released from duty in January /the soldiers/ and March /the sergeants/ 1944.

In the second half of 1943 were chosen paratroopers from age-group 1923. The group - about 400 men, under the command of poruchyk d-r Hristo Hristov and several officers were sent to training at the Kralevo airfield in Yugoslavia. The training was made by German officers, with the same program as in Braunschweig. When the training finished the group was relocated to the Vrazhdebna airfield near Sofia.

On 9.9.1944 the Red Army entered Bulgaria. The Paratrooper Battalion was at the Telysh Airfield /it was sent there when the Allied air raids on the capital became too strong/. Shortly later it was returned to Bozhurishte /the Bozhurishte and Vrazhdebna airfields are next - and nowadays inside - the capital, mainly there was based the fighter defense of the town/.

As the Red Army occupied the country, the rule was taken by the communists and Bulgaria became in war with Germany. The Paratrooper Battalion was sent to the Western Balkans to fight the retreating German forces. But before this the commander of the 1st Light Paratrooper Company poruchyk Svetoslav Yotzov, the commander of the Heavy Paratrooper Company poruchyk Georgy Markov and the platoon commander podporuchyk Konstantin Petrov were arrested and killed /in these times many people - military and civilians - were arrested and killed with or without trial. Even the members of all Bulgarian governments and parliaments since 1941 were arrested, sentenced to death by the communists' so-called 'People's court' and all shot and buried in large bomb hole I the beginning of February 1945 - T.M./

I will only say that the Bulgarian paratroopers fought bravely. The combat unit consisted of 429 soldiers and officers. As far as I know they did not make a jump, but participated in the battles as ground forces. They were used as elite forces - in Yugoslavia/Albania there were several strongly defended German lines, which the Bulgarian ordinary army could not brake. And there the paratroopers were sent - much smaller in number then the other Bulgarian forces, they did much better and succeeded in the missions they were given. In other words, the paratroopers were used as assault force where the other forces failed. They did great and paid high - 59 KIA, 151 wounded, 21 became disabled.

P.S. Together with the paratroopers, at Braunschweig were also trained two Bulgarian pilots. 5-6 more were trained in Bulgaria. They piloted Ju-52 machines from which paratrooper jumps were made in Bulgaria.
