The following is the translation of an excerpt of my buddy's diary by Philip Schatz:
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

"We are all getting to know each other, seeing as the men in our platoon are housed together in a barracks room. This is particularly important because when you belong to such a unit, whether or not it is in action, you need to know what you can expect from the others and if there are any reservations or precautions you must take. The latter is particularly important when making comments of a political nature; even minor criticisms can have dangerous consequences.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

We are also learning a great deal about the Führerhauptquartier (Führer’s Headquarters) and the Führerbegleitbataillon (Führer Escort Battalion - FEB), which, despite having been assigned to it 2 months ago, we still really don’t know much more than the name itself. "Adolf" as the veterans disrespectfully refer to the "Führer", was concerned that by being guarded by the Leibstandarte "Adolf Hitler" he would come under the influence of the SS and therefore Himmler more and more, eventually becoming their prisoner. That’s why the only elite unit in the German Army, the "Großdeutschland", which also provides the Guard Regiment in Berlin, has been tasked with guarding the Führer’s Headquarters. And there is more than one headquarters; the 3 we know of are "W-Null" near Münstereifel for the West (called "Rocky Refuge"), Vinnitsa in the Ukraine (called "Werewolf") and the main headquarters, the "Wolf’s Lair" in Rastenburg. A few of the vets were already around at "W-Null" and most have been to Vinnitsa and all of them have been at the "Wolf’s Lair", which is the most intriguing to us. What must it be like there? Despite the stories, we really don’t have a clue.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

During the winter of 1941/42 the battalion was in action in the northern sector of Russia in the Pripyet swamps. It took heavy casualties most of which were caused by the adverse weather conditions and not through enemy action. For example the company was crossing a very rough, large, flat snowy plain on its way to the assembly area when a tank suddenly disappeared. Shortly thereafter, two more tanks were gone, all without any enemy action. Only then did they realise that they were driving over a frozen lake and the ice was too weak in places to support the weight of the 26-ton tanks. Fever affected a lot of men and of course the extreme cold was very tough on everyone. Many suffered from severe frostbite, which often resulted in the amputation of toes or feet.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Despite these conditions the armoured troops made good progress and were sure they would take Leningrad shortly, its silhouette could already been seen on the horizon. Despite these advantageous circumstances and the importance the fall of Leningrad would have had, all armoured units were withdrawn from the sector and - probably for reasons of prestige - redeployed to the Moscow sector. Moscow had always been Hitler’s goal. Perhaps the "greatest commander of all time" saw Moscow as an opportunity to outdo Napoleon. But the tanks sank into mud up to a meter deep and then froze, with the far too early arrival of winter, so firmly that they could not be freed and were lost. The result was that neither Leningrad nor Moscow was taken. We were amazed by the verbal insults the participants hurled at the author of this disaster, namely Hitler. They didn’t sugar coat their opinions. It seems apparent that a member of the FEB is allowed to express himself far more than the average citizen.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

After that costly engagement the battalion was reassigned to guard the Führer’s HQ in Rastenburg and Vinnitsa. The Führer was in Vinnitsa from the beginning of the summer offensive of 1942 until November 23, when he returned to Rastenburg. With him, the FEB also returned. Then when the situation around Stalingrad was reaching its peak, we were put on alert. We immediately thought this another of those countless alarm drills and so many cheated, as was so often the case with drills, by not packing everything in their lockers, leaving a lot behind. But this time it was for real. The marching and entrainment orders were issued. Quick action and a few tricks made the retrieval of things left behind, as well drumming up the NCOs that had slept the night in town, possible.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

At the Rastenburg train station Goebbels gave the battalion a fiery and heroic speech, something he could do very well and believably. Then we headed off towards the Ukraine. Through Goebbels speech everyone knew was lay ahead. He spoke of a 400km gap in the front lines that was to be closed by our battalion. The 5th Company was still equipped with 5cm main guns and the heavy platoon with the 7.5cm "stub", a short cannon. Approximately 250km from Kharkov the Company, along with an anti-aircraft platoon of the 4th Company was unloaded in Certkovo. T-34 tanks already took us under fire while still on the rail ramp. The battle began with the first minute of our arrival. We quickly discovered that we were in a very unequal fight. Neither our 5cm guns nor the 7.5cm short barrel guns, with their low muzzle velocity as well as their arched flight path, have any effect on the T-34, while they are equipped with 7.62cm main guns. A few of the crewmembers told of T-34 commanders waving back at them after taking hits from the 5cm guns. We all think they’re just spinning a yarn. At any rate the only way to weather the storm was to make for the cover of the edge of town and let the enemy get a bit closer. And so what happened on December 23rd, 1942 was inevitable from the first moment on, the encirclement of Certkovo. The other elements of the Combat Group, including the Führer-Anti-aircraft Detachment, met the same fate. The Anti-aircraft Detachment was encircled in Millerovo where they fought heroically. The various elements of the Combat Group were never able to unite throughout the entire mission. The goal of the mission, to slow down the Russian advance was accomplished by the tenacious resistance of these elements behind enemy lines. But being encircled, something every soldier fears, demands the utmost effort and many casualties, especially seeing as the cauldron was so small and soon very far behind the front lines. Other units in Certkovo, that had been in combat longer and had already been involved in the withdrawal, were completely unnerved by the encirclement seeing as it didn’t look as though we would escape. So our people saw groups of Waffen-SS men get drunk and then charge the Russian lines upright. When asked, they said that nothing made much of a difference now seeing as none of us were going to come out of this alive. Better to choose a quick death. The SS obviously treated their men worse than the Army. For example our men were trying to help an SS man who was suffering from a stomach wound that left his intestines hanging out. When the SS medic saw us he said, "Leave him be. He is going to die soon anyway!" It also really wears you down when you can’t move around without immediately being shot at. If you have to go to the latrine the Stalin Organs start hauling and the only well available to our company is constantly under fire from anti-tank guns (7.62cm calibre). If you want water you have to be quicker than the anti-tank gun crews. They still laugh about Artur Hipp from Mannheim, he had to drop the full bucket back down the well over a dozen times because of those gunners. The situation became more disconcerting as the ammo started to run out. We stretched our ammunition by occupying and using the ammunition in 3 T-34s that had been knocked out at the edge of town but still had movable turrets.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

That’s when it was noticed that 2 of the tanks main guns had an "Rh" mark on them just like the guns in our tanks. That made everyone really mad. Hitler had signed a German-Russia

Hi,
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

He wrote the following about 5 months after arrival in Rastenburg Hindenburg Barracks:
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

25 Jun 1943 - Departing Stablack. The Battalion's move to (Hitler's) headquarters is to be executed as a war exercise. Unfortunately we have heavy rain. Our advance goes via many detours through gigantic forests with very old oak trees. At one occasion we missed the way while chasing a few armored halftracks and stopped at an estate owned by nobility, where we received kind hospitality. While chasing the "enemy", our driver knocks over two telegraph poles. Every now and then, one of the tanks is losing the protective armor aprons. The more we go south, the more it rains. After arriving at night in Heilsberg, we have a briefing at the town's railroad station.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

26 Jun 1943 - Around 1 AM we continue towards Schedenen and arrive there at about 2 AM. We finally are getting our dinner for which we've been waiting, with growling stomachs, since yesterday noon (we did not carry any food in our tanks). Our tank has to keep guard and since during the trip from Heilsberg to Schedenen I was fortunate enough to take a little nap in a box inside the shell bag, I assumed the guard duties. Around 3 AM it is getting light and at about 6 AM we are pursuing the enemy. The weather is improving, but because of this we are exposed to airplanes. Our platoon forms the spearhead and I am in the first tank. It is fabulous. We were successful in "destroying" three armored halftracks.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

After arriving in Rastenburg, the magic was gone at once and an entirely new life began. As soon as we arrived at the Hindenburg Barracks we ate and immediately after we were transported to the "installation".
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

The "installation", better known as the Führer's Headquarters "Wolf's Den" [Hitler's East Prussian Headquarters], lies about 6 kilometers east of Rastenburg on the railroad line Rastenburg-Angerburg, a line shut down for general traffic. The railroad station Görlitz is the station of the FHQ. There, the Führer's train is parked when he is in the Wolfsschanze. The main street in the FHQ, which begins at the ranger's house Görlitz, is a section of the road that runs from Rastenburg via Schwarzenstein to the railroad station and to the resort hotel Görlitz. The area of the FHQ begins east of the Lakes Moy and Zeiser and extends for about 2 kilometers to the vicinity of the Partsch Estate. The expansion in the north-south direction is about the same.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

The whole installation is surrounded by a 2-meter high as well deep barbed wire fence and besides a few narrow gaps, there are only two entrances: one leads via the main road to Guard Station "1" near the ranger's house, the other one is the road from Queden through Guard Station "South". The first one is for general traffic and for those supplies that are not brought by trains. The latter is for the transportation of the airplane passengers, because the airport of the headquarters is near Queden.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Inside the "Sperrkreis" (security area), the name for the area surrounded by the barbed wire fence, there are evenly dispersed barracks and small wooden houses which are well camouflaged by the forest's old trees. In close proximity of the living quarters of the general staff officers are concrete shelters, which are one-half submerged in the ground. For the members of the guard battalion and the staff communication crew, this protection is provided.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Deep inside the FHQ, somewhat east of the center, there are two additional security areas surrounded with high wire-netting: Sperrkreis 1, in which Hitler's barrack, his bunker, as well as the housing for Field-Marshall Keitel, Reichsleiter Bormann, Reichspressechef Dr. Dietrich, for Göring and Jodl, and as well for the adjutants; Sperrkreis 2 was occupied by the High Command of the armed forces, the personal physician of Hitler, Dr. Morell, etc.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

West of the railroad station Görlitz is the train in which Keitel's staff is located. Keitel's son is also in this train.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

The entire installation is guarded by us. We post the sentries for Guard Stations 1 and South, as well as the patrolling guards. These lengths of these patrol sections are between 100 and 300 meters during daylight hours and about one-third less during darkness within the fence. In addition, 3-men guard groups patrol along the perimeter of the headquarters. At the security areas 1 and 2, our guards are posted at the entrances only. Special guard duties are occasionally assigned for special items such as the "Fieseler Storch" plane which is parked at a small meadow that is just big enough for take-off and landing and is located near Security Area 1.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Further protection for the installation is provided by terrain conditions and by military units stationed in the surroundings, such as: to the east the chain of lakes Kröste, Löwentin, Taita, Deyguhn, Kissain, Doben, Labab, Dargainen, Mauer, and Schwenzait; to the north lakes Steinweiken, Rehsauer, and Schülzer; to the west lakes Moy and Zeiser and finally to the south the many small lakes between the towns of Queden, Pohiebels, and Groß-Stürlack.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

There are military installations and installations guarded by the military in close proximity of the FHQ: Secretary of State Ribbentrop in Schwarzstein; in Rosengarten Himmler and the headquarters of the SS; near Lötzen the High Command of the air force with Marshall Göring; in Angerburg the High Command of the Army and in Karlshof, General Schmund (Chief Adjudant of Hitler) with his staff. In addition, there is an SS unit equipped with captured Russian T-34 tanks. In Rastenburg, all barracks are filled with troops. All in all, the FHQ lies in the midst of a military bee hive, which is protected by natural surroundings.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

In the eventuality of a planned attack on Hitler and his staff, many defenders would have to be first eliminated. And the little "secondary Hitlers" (Nebenhitler), like Göring and Himmler, are naturally concerned about their safety by placing their elite units, as "Hermann Göring" or
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

"Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler", close to the FHQ. Of course, that also means additional protection of the Führer.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Almost all of the barracks where the units of the Führer's Escort Battalion (FBB) are quartered are within the confines of the installation. Each platoon consisting of about 25 men is assigned to a barrack. The vehicles are parked under camouflage nets near the barracks.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Our (the first platoon's) barrack is one of the exception and is situated outside the Security Area, north of Security Gate 1, about 80 meters from Lake Moy which we can see glimmering through the forest. The barrack is well cared for and the area around it is landscaped with birch poles, flowers, and flag stone paths. It is a good place to live and its location has the advantage that we don't have to pass through the Guard Gate 1 when leaving the headquarters during our off-duty hours, that we are not always under strict supervision, and that we can go swimming in Lake Moy quickly and at any time. We even can go swimming without bathing trunks because the "official" beach is somewhat to the north. When going to the mess facilities, to the showers, and to guard duty, we of course had to go through the guard gate. This situation gives us the feeling of having a little civilian freedom.

XMAS at BATTLE OF THE BULGE-Excerpt from my war buddy's diary

I posted this story in 2000 as:

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

{My friend was in the Battle of the Bulge (Gralingen) whileI spent Xmas '44 in Prüm in the Eifel, recuperating from my wounds. His tank was incapacitated. They've been waiting for the repair
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

crew to come to their aid. He wrote the following in his diary [translated by machine translations and edited (more or less)] by me:
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

24.12. 1944 Christmas Eve. Since all houses are vacant, we billeted ourselves in the best looking farm . The living room, low, but very spacious, lies on the top floor and spreads over the whole width of the house. On one of the side of the house is the street and a mighty dung pile, on the other, a light slope ends at a wide hollow. Beyond the hollow, that one can overlook well from the room, a hill rises whose top is forested. There we expected that the Ami [German slang for US troops] would have to be. But nobody knows for sure. Until late into midday we work on the tank, without being able to repair it completely. After a nap, we want to prepare for Christmas. But then, a quartering party of an Artillery unit arrived. A lieutenant claims "our" house for the staff and abruptly throws us from our Christmas quarters , which we had decorated for a beautiful celebration. We were furious, but he outranked us and could give the order. We must obey. Understandably we had no good wishes for him. We disappointedly moved to the laundry room. All houses in the village are requisitioned by the Artillerie unit meanwhile. Above us, the artillery staff with a colonel commanding moved in. On the big table, maps are spread and its a continuous bustling back and forth. We as a non-artillery soldier are treated as nobodies. For these men, we are a nothingness. We already are fed up with this very much. Towards evening, the Amis, from direction of the far side of the Hill, began artillery fire. Calibers 10 to 21 centimeters, quite heavy pieces. Most of the impacts, as far as we from our Laundry room can observe, are in the open hollow in the village. We are quite surprised that approximately 90 percent of the impacts are duds. One hears only a "thump" from them. The artillery soldiers say that the Ami cannons probably are using captured German ammunition.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

Because of the centrifugal arming device, which has a reverse spin as compared with the Ami guns, does not disengage for it blocks the firing pin as protection . Therefore the dud shots. A few shots also hit the town. As it becomes dark, the Amis (Americans) achieve a direct hit in the dung pile in front of our house. And that is no dud! The detonation sounds admittedly somewhat peculiarly gloomy and muffled, however, the effect is grand. Because a sizeable portion of dung, probably several hundredweights, hurled through the windows in the main room upward. As we arrive upstairs under the pretext to render help, the men do not look exactly as refined officers of the staff. Not to mention the terrible smell. The maps are dirtied like a pasture well covered with cow dung. And on the ceiling hang many beautiful Christmas stars created by the dung. Not without malicious pleasure, we leave again. Who would have thought that our good wishes would be fulfilled so fast? On the other hand, we are glad that we were spared from this dirty encounter. It might have spoiled however the party for as sensitive tank people. Franz organized a small Christmas tree; a few Hindenburg (?) lights are lit and also the chicken soup is already heated. While we spoon it down, a wild racing begins in the house. Ah, the staff personnel is leaving! The gentlemen-like Artillery soldiers of course don't want to endanger themselves. They packed up quickly and left Gralingen with all their people. We are again quite alone and the masters of the town. To remain in the cold Laundry room and in addition in the place that's facing the enemies' side was out of question.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

With our paraphernalia and with the Christmas tree we move into another farmhouse in the middle of the village, where we find a small dog, who is quite happy to be among people during all the
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

shooting. In the stall are bellowing hungry cows . We move the Panzer as close as possible to the stall wall and camouflage it as prescribed with boards, implements and bed sheets. Then, Franz,
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

as the only knowledgable milker must milk the cows while we city-dwellers provide them with water and feed. Slowly, the nerve-killing roar stops. We only hear it subdued from the neighboring cows. But after all, Franz cannot with all his efficiency milk all cows in the town. Then, we look around in the house. One comes quite enthusiastically with a bucket filled with snow-white
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

flour from the attic. That has been a rarity in Germany for years. The radio man, as curious as he is, tastes one handful of it to find out whether it is still edible but at once spits it out. The beautiful
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

snow-white flour is plaster! However, we then find after all flour and a quantity of hard-frozen apples. So, we get in addition to our punch Ice apples and pancakes made without eggs. That was our "Holy Christmas Eve". The apples taste good as long as they are frozen. When thawed they immediately spoil. I take many along with me and eat at least 20 pounds of them. The temperature drops at times to minus 20 degrees (C). They agree with me well.
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

25.12.1944 --- First Christmas day. The Americans shoot the whole day with artillery zone firing. But this doesn't disturb us particularly. Although we know that it is only an illusion, we feel safe in the center of the town. We cannot accomplish anything [to repair our tank], we therefore talk and tell stories, eat and drink, as far as long as something is still available. We gradually are
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

working together well and we understand each other quite well. With Jupp it is never is boring. Also not on this day. The Amis take care of the monotony with their zone firing. Little by little, however, more and more destructions occur especially since now no duds occur anymore. Nevertheless, we are not giving up as yet. What worries us most is the total ignorance over the location of the front line. We don't have any idea, whether there are German troops between us and the Amis. There is no one to see anywhere, although we regularly look from the town's perimeter in all directions, in order not to be suddenly caught unawares by the enemy. It upsets us that we don't hear anything from our Kompanie, from whom we so urgently expect the repair
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

troops with the spare parts for our Panzer. It seems impossible that they are too far away that they could not get in contact with us. Being immobilized is damn unpleasant feeling under the
浪漫烛光 www.langmanzg.com

given circumstances. We don't want to be captured so cheaply. Because of pity and because of the terrifying bellowing of the cows so gradually is getting on our nerves, we feed the livestock in the whole town. Franz can milk only some of the cows. The night is restless. A part of the animals still yell. The Ari shoots constantly and completely unpredictably. They achieved again and again hits in the town. The remaining one is pure powder waste, since no German is in the whole surrounding area. Shortly after we fell asleep, our dog starts barking. We hope its our I-Trupp. We sneak carefully, the arms in our hands to the front door. One look and we know. Beside our, than goodness well camouflaged tank, we see in the snow-lit night American steel helmets against the night heaven. An American reconnaissance patrol, over one dozen man strong, who did stop to orient themselves. We hear them speaking and they turned on a flashlight in order to study the map. We keep dog's muzzle shut and we let the Amis pass by. After less than half an hour, they return from their exploration. They could not have found out a lot. However, the incident tells us what's going on. The Amis probably are nearer than w
