February 1st -5th 1945

Our unit is located somewhere near Litzmannstadt[里兹曼城，罗兹城在1940年被德军占领后改名里兹曼城(LITZMANNSTADT)，以纪念卡尔·里兹曼(Karl Litzmann,1850-1936年)，他是德国著名将军]. Around 2am we attacked. We reached the objective of our assault by 5am. We had many successes! On the evening of 5th February I was called to perform sentry and guard duty. I reported to our ordnance officer told him that during the last day of battle, our tank had expended six High Explosive shells and 200 rounds of machine gun ammunition. Guard duty lasted only a few hours and I strained to stay awake.

February 6th 1945

We spent the entire day securing and defending our positions. During all this time we received continuous anti-tank, mortar, and artillery fire. We veterans are used to it, but the new ones in the unit are petrified. We have to calm them down and reassure them, even though we ourselves are scared.

During the course of the day, the Ivan attacked numerous times but we managed to repulse them. Unfortunately Unter-offizier Muller[穆勒中士] and Gefreiter Dosse[多瑟代理下士] were both killed by a direct hit from a mortar round into the turret of their vehicle. What a lucky shot for Ivan, but unlucky for Muller and Dosse! The tank can still be used, but some repairs have to be made. There was blood and flesh everywhere inside of the turret! The rest of Muller’s crew just couldn’t clean it and refused to do it ,so the Leutnant[少尉] ordered us.

因为炮塔里面一片血肉模糊，所以穆勒车组的幸存者拒绝清理，而且他们实际上也无法清理，因此少尉命令我们去清理。

February 7th 1945

I was posted to guard and sentry duty again today. It lasted until 3pm. All throughout we received enemy fire, which pretty much meant that I had to keep my head down! Due to the intense artillery fire, the houses around us were flattened and their debris caught fire. During the morning the Russians made another counterattack but were beaten back with heavy losses to their infantry.

Around 3:30pm Ivan was able to make a large breakthrough in the lines of our sister company to our left. The Leutnant sent our platoon and some supporting infantry to counterattack. After 1 to 2 hours of battle we managed to link up with our neighbors and retake the village of Wuhden. Our tank and eleven infantry are all that survived. We lost two panzers and 22 Landser.

We were able to destroy 5 PAK’s several heavy machine guns and some anti-tank rifles. The Russians lost only a few infantrymen. We certainly got the worst end of it although we plugged the gap.

Our panzer took many hits but thankfully is still operational. One of the steering lever’s and our radioman’s machine gun was destroyed by the impact of several 76.2mm anti-tank rounds which hit our tank. Today we spent a total of thirty high explosive shells, fifteen anti-tank gun shells, and expended 3,700 machine gun rounds. At this rate, we’ll run out of ammo soon.

February 8th 1945

We once again spent the day defending our sector. At 2:30pm we received the order to attack. We used four tanks for the assault and we managed to destroy three PAK guns within a short period of time. These PAK guns were the same ones that yesterday had managed to score direct hits on our tank. It felt good to get them and kill their gunners.

After about an hour, we returned to our positions. We didn’t have much infantry support and Ivan is notorious for sneaking up on tanks. The rest of the day was relativefly quiet, given that we had destroyed the guns which had been making our life so miserable.

February 9th 1945

Breakfast was interrupted by an artillery barrage. I threw up breakfast when a round hit close by and knocked the wind out of me. We secured and defended our sector of the front until about 2:30pm. At this time the entire company attacked Ivan. We made very slow progress and proceeded cautiously, still looking for Russian PAKs which our enemy appears to have in huge numbers. Before the day was out we had destroyed several more guns.

We spent the night securing our sector. At 4am we were finally re-supplied. It was the first time in many days that we got hot rations! We spent six high explosive shells and about 1,500 rounds of machine gun ammunition during the day. The Leutnant says that he’s happy with our ammunition discipline. Our losses today included Oberfeldwebel Ludeke[吕德克军士长], who was killed by an anti-tank shell.

February 10th 1945

From 6am we were standing by to go into battle. At 9am we launched an attack. Again we made slow progress, with every tank afraid of falling into the close sights of a Russian PAK. The enemy had deceptively echeloned one PAK after another. This time however, Ivan suffered heavy losses in his infantry. We managed to destroy quite a number of machine guns, anti-tank rifles and PAK guns. An hour after our initial assault, at 10am, Ivan counterattacked. Since we had run out of ammunition, we had no choice but to withdraw and forced to return to our original lines.

Thank God the re-supply truck arrived and we received some shells and about 1,100 rounds of machine gun ammo. We spent the rest of the day expecting another Russian counterattack, but it seemed as though they weren’t in the mood to lose more men.

That probably saved us. Had they hit us again immediately after we withdrew to our original position, we all probably would have been killed. We spent twenty high explosive shells, eight anti-tank gun shells, and 3,500 rounds of machine gun ammunition. This was totally unacceptable to Leutnant Meyer, but we really had no choice. Those round could have normally lasted us about 3-4 days of defensive fighting, but in the attack, you waste more rounds shooting anything that moves.

February 11th 1945

We secured our positions all morning and up until 1pm. The first defensive mission we performed dismounted and outside our tank. We took this opportunity to cook ourselves some pudding! We were ordered to attack the enemy at 1pm. Once again we made slow progress.

At first there was no resistance, which made us all fell very uneasy. Then suddenly Ivan laid down an intense wall of artillery fire just in front of our noses. We were lured into a trap. Suddenly we began to receive horrendous PAK fire from all sides.

Feldwebel Schilling’s tank was hit and began to burn and smoke. The crew bailed out. The tank was a total loss. One of the crew, Obergefreiter Waldow, was hit by shell splinters and rifle fire. He was taken back to the battalion aid station but I later found that he died from his wounds.

My friend Weir, also received several hits. Our tank crew seemed on the point of depression, but then our radioman turned on the radio and found a patriotic song. We all began singing together. I guess that these losses within our company aren’t enough to shake the confidence from old sailors like ourselves.

Our tank’s condition had finally reached the point where we needed to make serious repairs. Many items of equipment inside the tank were now loose and we had to withdraw to the rear or face a breakdown. We brought the tank back to the starting point and then volunteered for picket duty while the repair crews from the maintenance unit looked after our tank.

After the days’ battle, we took stock of our expenditures. This day we had spent thirty-two high explosive shells, fifteen anti-tank shells, and 3,700 rounds of machine gun ammunition. We spent all of February 12th on guard duty. Ivan decided not to attack us, much to our relief.

February 13th 1945

Today we launched an attack on the enemy at 11:30am. Falling snow made for poor visibility during the attack. In the middle of the battle we were put out of action by damage to the steering mechanism of the tank. We could only drive the panzer in reverse! After it got dark we managed to drive the tank back in reverse.

The “J-Gruppe” (maintenance men) had a good laugh when they say us coming towards them in reverse. They repaired the problem. I later learned that during the days’ battle, our company commander had been present. We spent the rest of the night securing our front. Our expenditures of ammunition today were six high explosive shells and 450 rounds of machine gun ammunition.

February 14th 1945

We secured our sector until 12:00pm. Then we heard that enemy tanks were attacking. From 2,000 meters we sighted an enemy tank and immediately opened fire. All of our shells bounced off the enemy tank! Leutnant Machalet hit the enemy tank at a range of 1200 meters and it burst into flames.

Around 2:30pm we launched an attack with five tanks and advanced to within 700 meters of the Oder River. We inadvertently sank one of our tanks into loose dirt near the west bank. We could not retrieve the tank because we were afraid of getting stuck ourselves.

Besides, we began to receive artillery and anti-tank fire coming from the other side of the river bank. But before we withdrew, we saw two Russian patrol boats out on the Oder River near our positions. Before withdrawing, we managed to sink one of them with a tank round.
