斐迪南一直是頗具爭議性的武器，大家最早讀到的都是它缺乏近戰武器，所以紅軍步兵可以輕易地爬上機關室用噴火器摧毀它。事實上這完全是俄國文件的片面之詞。

89輛斐迪南在1943年5月編成653、654兩個營， 656團所轄653、654、216營被編在第九軍團41戰車軍下(另如第503和505重戰車營的90輛虎式在47戰車軍轄下)在北部戰線作戰。在七月初庫斯克之戰和之後到月底的撤退中，653營損失了13輛車，654營則損失26輛(兩個北方戰區的虎式重戰車營則在七月間損失了13輛車)，但是擊毀的紅軍戰車總數在500輛以上!!交換比高達1:13!(以陸軍502重戰車營為例，其全部戰史所構成的交換比約1:12，雖然這樣的比較有時空上的不客觀，但是也足以說明斐迪南不是肉腳的武器) ，連斐迪南的乘員都認為這是極佳的武器。

在損失的斐迪南中，俄文的斐迪南一書提供了極重要的資訊，該書主要包含的是654營的損失，在某一個車站附近，654營損失了21輛的斐迪南! 有一張照片顯示在戰場上滿是俄軍T-70和T-34的殘骸，其中夾雜著兩輛被放棄的斐迪南，可以想像一群洪水般的俄軍戰車部隊擁向這群斐迪南的情景。

在所有照片中，最常見的影像是脫落履帶或連懸吊系統路輪一起脫落的斐迪南，這些多半是被地雷所傷，乘員不得不放棄的車輛，這也說明斐迪南的致命缺點並不在裝甲或火力，而在機動力! 由於斐迪南用的不是扭力桿，而是以鑼栓固定的外掛懸吊器，往往中了一枚地雷就把前兩路輪的懸吊系統或路輪炸掉了，缺了一組懸吊系統和路輪，便足以讓斐迪南寸步難行，偏偏斐迪南的厚重裝甲使它被賦予突破的任務，當深入敵陣，其他中戰車和步兵早就被隔絕在火網後，因此一但受創無法行動，乘員就只能棄車逃逸。可以說車輛受創失去行動力後，乘員自爆是斐迪南損失的主要原因。

另一主要的原因是俄軍的砲兵，由於擔任突破的攻堅任務，當斐迪南前進時往往冒著俄軍的各式火砲構成的火網，但直射武器除SU152(KV14)外都不是斐迪南的對手，(653營戰史一書第146頁有一張整個車身正面裝甲被打掉的照片，大概是SU152的傑作) ，曲射武器卻大大發揮影響力，不僅314無線電戰車連的B IV開出來的雷區通道被砲兵炸得不可辨認，使得斐迪南必須冒險前進，在653營損失的車輛中，也有許多是被曲射火砲擊中機關室而報銷的，被打到戰鬥室車身分離的，如果有的話也只是極少數。

654營的斐迪南在8月轉移給653營之後，653營擁有50輛斐迪南，這些車輛並一直在東線奮戰到1944年1月才回到維也納進行改裝，此時653營仍有滿編的45輛車，也就是說，在五個月的撤退戰中，該營只損失5輛斐迪南，這樣的成績算是替斐迪南說了些公道話。

(在此間作戰路線最接近653營的是陸軍506重戰車營，但在1943/9-12月三個月該營損失近20輛虎一)俄文的斐迪南一書中，作者在評估那些受創的斐迪南之後，也認為它是個可敬的對手，並認為只有不當的戰術使用才會導致那麼大量的損失。個人認為653營在戰術運用上應該比654營高竿一些。

至於象式，雖然加裝機槍後比較能對付步兵的威脅，但是1944年的戰局德軍不僅失去空優，東線德軍在兵力和武器的數量都遠不及1943年，因此象式在義大利和東部戰線都是一下便敗光，653營一連11輛象式最後回到國內的僅剩一輛，而營本部和二、三連的34輛象式從4月打到8月只剩12輛，多數是損失在撤退中(無法拖救而自爆)，最後被合併至2連，9月時尚有14輛象式，於12月改稱614重戰車獵兵連。這支部隊一直打到柏林防衛戰時還有四輛象式參戰。在德軍的戰車中，以90輛份的產量，撐了22個月還能有4輛車作戰，也算一項奇蹟。

以下是陸軍656重戰車獵兵團第二營(1943/8/16改稱654重戰車獵兵營)在庫斯克會戰的戰後報告，翻譯自The Combat History of schwere Panzerjaeger Abteilung 654一書。該營原本的指揮官Karl-Heinz Noak上尉在開戰第一天便受傷出局，遺缺由三連連長Rolf Hennig上尉接任。該報告是8/1寫成，期間該營已經損失了26輛斐迪南。7/30該營剩下19輛斐迪南和6輛三號戰車(只損失一輛)；8/6剩下的車輛全部讓渡給656團一營(後來的653營)。

作戰結束報告(斐迪南的作戰)

斐迪南的裝甲不僅僅是剛好，甚至是太強了。就我所知，我營上沒有任何一輛斐迪南被從正面側面或背面貫穿。76.2mm戰防砲的直擊只能穿透30-40公厘而已。依我看正面120-150mm，背面50mm的裝甲應該就夠了。底面的裝甲十分適當，但是頂部的裝甲應該再厚個10mm以抵擋砲兵的直接命中。至於外部的，應該可以加裝鐵絲網以防敵軍的錐形裝藥攻擊；支撐架應該加垂直裝甲，增加鐵網和裝甲間的距離；後方的緊急逃生門不適當，希望能將後方用來丟棄彈殼的艙門加大一倍，以當作正常的出入口。斐迪南的88mm主砲真是十分優秀，但是經常會脫離定位而輕微卡位，因此連上的技士應該至少搭乘一輛車當成裝填手火砲手。建議最好跟隨連長的指揮砲車，以便連長需要換車時能跟著他。

在此也希望能有裝設好的機槍或或噴火器，主砲的俯仰和轉動裝置經過證實很難操作，當目標移動的時候沒有辦法那樣快調整，主砲的移動角度對移動的目標也很不適當。

斐迪南的引擎出力不足，前面提到如果可以減少裝甲厚度應該可以減輕引擎負荷引擎在不良地形(泥地)很容易就過熱，引起失火的危險。據我所知有四輛斐迪南因此報銷。在一些其他的例子，火災往往在最後關頭才被撲滅。滅火系統並不適當，除了不能噴出滅火液之外，容量也太小。

機關室的柵欄絕對需要保護；機關室設置在砲塔後方似乎是比較合理。四組電池絕對需要，中雷的時候往往會損害到電池，缺乏備用電池意味要從別的車輛取來電池；兩組電池過度使用經常造成引擎無法發動，或是無線電與車內通信無法運作。

無線電設備表現適當。極少數幾輛車的例子中，干擾無法完全解決，收發持續有問題。因為斐迪南損失很重，單獨裝置Fu8當作收信機沒有很大的效用使用；“Friedrich”(車外電話?)裝置的評價不一，我只有在第一天使用它和我所支援的一個營(步兵)通聯而達到很好的成效，沒有必要在車中裝置；已有的Fu5已經足夠。此外建議派遣一個我們的人到支援的步兵部隊去操作Friedrich，也建議連長再換車的時候帶著他的通訊士一起行動。

旋轉潛望鏡提供的觀測能力並非不好，但是如果車長艙能有剪式的望遠鏡(砲隊鏡)會更好。在脫出、換車15次之後(天啊!)，我觀察到各輛車潛望鏡和砲隊鏡的裝設很不一致，有些真的很不適當，將潛望鏡和砲隊鏡組合在一起絕對必要。最近剛配發的2公尺望遠鏡證明很成功，但是視野和清晰度應該還可以加強。

基本上，地形還算適合進行攻防，但是一但下雨，引擎就立刻變得不夠力。

有效率並組織良好的補給系統有絕對的重要性。這需要一個可以獨立作業的優秀領導人，因為(前後方)經常沒有無線電聯繫，他必須自己下決定。在所有情形下，營負責補給，但是是否由連自行負責補給會比較合適，尤其是離開營作戰的時候，還值得討論。彈藥運輸車證實十分有效率，但是他們數量不足，尤其是遠離營作戰的時候。

聯繫作戰部隊和維修部隊的是Baurat(技師)或Schirrmeister(維修士)(Baurat應該是Porsche派駐部隊的技術顧問)，技師一天聯絡戰鬥部隊數次絕對有必要，以排除一些小問題。但是對我們營來說，這個系統卻無法運作，因為敵軍強烈的砲火使技師無法搭乘他的參謀車前往前線。因此營有絕對的必要提供SPW供技師使用。這個要求不算太過。

在最初幾天因敵軍炮火而損失的裝甲救護車對營上造成很大不便，在戰鬥中醫療處理因而不全或被延宕。

三號戰車使得指揮和控制斐迪南容易得多，當斐迪南的無線電無法運作的時候，三號戰車證實是很有效率的通訊車。因為斐迪南的機動能力較差，三號戰車在偵蒐、建立聯絡和其他用途上都很重要。

最初害怕斐迪南會遭到敵軍步兵毒手的恐懼在現實中並不存在。主砲射擊時的聲響和巨大的斐迪南對敵軍步兵有很大的心理效果。投入斐迪南作戰的那些天裡頭，沒有敵軍步兵膽敢接近他，教範裡頭不准投入斐迪南對抗步兵因此似乎沒有根據。

經驗裡頭顯示斐迪南會引來敵軍的炮火，這對伴隨的步兵造成莫大威脅，因為他們聽不到來襲的砲彈嘯聲也來不及掩蔽。7/15斐迪南和步兵的協同作戰以我來看相當有成效。步兵在斐迪南兩側500-1000公尺伴隨前進，和斐迪南在同一時間攻入敵軍的戰壕系統，大批步兵跟在斐迪南後面前進只會造成步兵不必要的大量傷亡。

當我們的步兵跟隨斐迪南前進的時候，他們經常忘了要留給斐迪南開火的距離。和步兵取得聯繫與直接合作從開始以來一直都是問題，在一個連上裝設一台以上的電話並不恰當，因為會造成無線電運作負荷過重。因此一個比較可行的做法是一名步兵或是班長爬上車身後方，由艙門直接跟乘員溝通。很多例子裡面乘員不是沒看到步兵射擊信號槍指示目標就是錯誤判讀。和戰鬥工兵一起工作也很困難，我們試圖由各連車輛在車身後面裝座椅以搭載營上的戰鬥工兵，但是此一企圖卻失敗了，因為我們參與攻擊的44輛車裡頭的三分之一中了我們自己通路標示不清的雷區，這些車輛搭載了我們全部的戰鬥工兵。

敵軍的強烈砲火也使得營上的工兵無法在重要時刻出現，如果懷疑有敵軍的雷區 --- 通常都會有鐵絲網圍繞。對我來說，這時候再派出兩名戰鬥工兵在領頭的車輛前面引導通過。攻擊的第一天因為沒有工兵，導致右翼部隊在一區雜亂的鐵絲網前耽擱了兩三個小時，因為懷疑是雷區。如果那時有兩名工兵應該就足以判斷那是個假的雷區，攻擊就不會被延誤了。基於這個教訓，戰鬥工兵似乎絕對必要配備SPW前進戰場。

在斐迪南和突擊戰車(Sturmpanzer)組成戰鬥群一起攻擊的場合，補給的議題應該事先依照時程來討論與安排。斐迪南和突擊戰車的組合證實十分成功，今後應該儘可能安排。當兩款車有一樣的無線電設備時，指揮和控制都沒有問題。考慮到射程問題，可能的話應該讓突擊戰車跟在斐迪南後方，我們大部分的車輛都沒有航空識別旗供我空軍識別。

北面德軍攻勢停止之後，7/12-13開始回收遺留在Ponyri戰場上的損傷車輛。在654營的援護之下，成功地回收了十多輛車。但是7/14俄軍開始強力反擊，20日德軍全面撤退，戰場被俄軍佔領，遺留當地來不及搶救的21輛斐迪南、3輛圖及戰車、八輛三號與四號戰車被擄獲。紅軍裝甲局(GABTU)與砲兵局(GAU)(類似德軍的兵監)各派了一支調查隊伍前往前線檢視這些斐迪南，對每輛車的損毀狀況做詳細紀錄，也對當地本軍作戰準備和戰鬥經驗檢討，做為日後與其對抗的參考。

報告中指出，21輛斐迪南中有10輛中雷損毀，其中的四輛(502、522、523、734)壓到了航空炸彈或重砲砲彈改裝的特殊地雷，當中的兩輛(522、734)不僅履帶、路輪損毀，還把底盤裝甲炸破，引起火災燒毀；502履帶斷裂，車體燒毀，被俄軍在現地做射擊測試；523中雷後乘員自爆。壓到一般戰防雷的六輛是I-02、501、514、524、II-02、731，其中的三輛I-02、514、524乘員自爆；II-02中雷使左履帶斷裂，被俄軍步兵用火焰瓶攻擊燒毀(註：照片看起來沒有燒毀跡象)；501、731則損傷輕微，俄軍修補後送回後方展示、測試。

另有9輛車(II-03、601、602、701、???、712、713、723、732)被砲彈或反戰車槍損毀，其中7輛的行走裝置(履帶、惰輪、路輪、驅動輪)被直接命中，當中的三輛(601、712、713)由乘員自爆；732號車路輪被擊傷後，遭火焰瓶攻擊燒毀；???與723被砲彈及反坦克槍擊傷，702?主炮被貫穿斷裂，乘員被俘，而723則是履帶被擊毀、主砲遭貫穿而遺棄，後來俄軍拿來做現地射擊；II-03履帶中彈損傷，俄軍以火焰瓶攻擊燒毀(註：照片看起來沒有燒毀跡象)。

被火砲擊穿車體的車輛中，602號車被76.2mm穿甲彈貫穿引擎室左側，引燃油料燒毀，是唯一一輛在戰車對戰中被擊毀的斐迪南；701被203mm重砲擊中，全車爆炸。

其他損失原因車輛，包含II-01被火焰瓶攻擊燒毀，一輛編號不明的車輛被飛機炸毀，身首異處。

俄軍的技術情報對斐迪南做了以下評量：

大部分損毀的車輛都燒毀，有一些是中了重型地雷後引燃油路起火，有些是乘員自爆。油路系統的安全性可能有問題。而現地火砲測試結果，發現斐迪南的正面非常強韌，難以破壞。斐迪南的機動力不良，道路以外能使用的地形有限，速度也慢。缺乏近戰兵器，步兵可以用火焰瓶加以攻擊。

針對斐迪南的弱點，俄軍技術情報也提出對抗的對策：

1.集中攻擊行走裝置，使其失去行動能力。

2.車輛無法行動後，以火焰瓶、火焰放射器、燒夷槍榴弹攻擊，或以迫擊炮、重砲等曲射武器射擊引擎室加以破壞燒毀。

3.開發可以在400-1000m射程擊毀斐迪南正面的戰防砲。

基本上在1943年俄軍對斐迪南並沒有完善的對抗方案，當斐迪南用於防禦或有效的步戰協同攻擊下，非常難以對抗。

至於654營沒有被摧毀或落入俄軍之手的斐迪南，幾乎也都需要修理

大多數的損毀集中在引擎、冷卻系統、行走裝置等，

光要換引擎的便有7輛冷卻系統和行走裝置要修理各達15、14輛。

On the first day of action, we successfully engaged bunkers, infantry, field and anti-tank artillery positions. For three hours our guns (Ferdinands) fought in the cavalcade of enemy fire and proved to be immune to enemy fire !. In the evening of the first day, first enemy tanks were destroyed, while others retreated. Crews of field and anti-tank guns run away after firing few uneffective shots against our guns (Ferdinands). In first engagements our regiment (656 sPanzerjager Regiment) destroyed numerous artillery positions, bunkers as well as 120 enemy tanks...". - Report from July 19th of 1943 by Platoon commander Boehm

Experience report of Heinz Gröschl to Professor Porsche, 25th July 1943.

Front report to Prof. Porsche about experience/problems with "Ferdinand" (1943)

Our vehicles have been operational for three weeks now and on average they have driven 500 km, including the distance driven before. I have collected enough experiences to sketch a view of the performance and failures of our vehicles. In complete agreement with the Abteilung's higher officers, I can say that the weapon was succesfull and it is regrettable that only a small number of it is available.

... Unfortunately, most of the vehicles are under repair at present. Moreover, this situation gets worse every day, because no spare parts are left and all parts are wearing out more and more. No new spare parts have arrived yet. Of the original number of 44 vehicles, 17 are missing now. Of these, 7 have been given to the other Abteilung by order of the regiment while the other 10 had to be written off as total loss.

Braking system

Some cases of damage to the brakes in Neusiedl are known to Mr. Zadnik. Untill now no difficulties have emerged. Of two vehicles, one brake drum each has been shot through. The vehicles remained operational for 1 or 2 days, with the damage, but the inner parts were fully destroyed.

Body

Has proven itself to be almost invulnerable for enemy fire. A hit by a 76.2 mm on the side, near the hindmost air intake, only resulted in many cracks. This hit remained without complications. Experience has shown that the welds are vulnerable spots, as, without fire extinguishers an artillery- or bomb hit on or near the welds tends to set the vehicle into fire immediately. The splinters penetrate into the fuel tanks or damage other vital parts, like water pipes. In some instances the fuel in the pipes began to boil due to the very high temperature in the engine room. The attachment of winches, tools and ropes on the outside of the body was wrong. The destruction of these items within a short time could have been expected.

Superstructure

Was penetrated from the side in some cases. The tighting of the hull (the welds) is of very poor quality or even totally absent. Small splinters penetrate through the gun's armour, which resulted in wounded crew-members. The temperature in the crew compartment still is too high. In some instances, the ammunition for the light pistol detonated itself. According to commanders and aimers, the warming of the shells stored on the bottom leads to shots that are too far.

Engines

Engine failure is a much occuring problem. Damages are: valves that bend or are pulled which leads to destroyed pistons, bended or pulled-rods and cracked cylinder-heads. In my opinion, the poor engine power is the main cause of these problems. Cracks and leaking pistons surely are caused by overheating. A water loss of 10 liters is not acceptable, according to experiences. The connections of the exhaust pipe's parts only hold for a short while, which leads to a high risk of fire. The replacement of the connection parts (which are very difficult to reach) is extremely difficult and takes a long time. At present, it is impossible to change broken engines, as reserve engines are not in stock.

Cooling

Leaking coolers and defective ventilators have already caused much work. Most leaks occur in the soldering of the lowest support. I suppose the cause is the short, rigid tube-connection between both cooler's lowest supports. In case of defective ventilators, the drive-flange was welded to the ventilator-shaft. Reserve parts for these are lacking.

Generators, electric engines

In Neusiedl, we had the last trouble with a generator. Again, it was caused by the interruption in the contact still placed in the lower part. After that, no other troubles have occurred. However it must be emphasised that the weather has been dry and that the vehicles rarely cool down entirely. On the other hand, the generators gather much dust, but it does not seem to influence the reliability.

Gear-box

No troubles of any importance occurred. The back-drive of three vehicles has been replaced. These parts gather much dust too.

Electric installation, battery

The electric installation with reversed flow direction has caused huge complications. The total loss of one of the vehicles was caused by the installation. We had vehicles with blown fuses (and empty batteries as a consequence) every day. Mr. Zadnik probably has reported that to you already. We have decided to convert the electric installation to the former flow direction and have finished this work on 9 vehicles. With these converted vehicles we have had no more problems. Unfortunately Mr. Scharpf of the Bosch company, who assisted us in converting the installations, has died in action. The installation of the batteries is bad. The first day of our attack has cost us more than 30 batteries. In all cases the housings have been flattened or totally destroyed. Every vehicle that has droven onto a mine has lost one or both of the batteries. Sometimes enemy fire has the same effect. Both the batteries of the radio installation have had to meet strong demands and thus they often have to be reloaded outside of the vehicles.

Telekinz, speedometer

Troubles also occur on telekinz and these can only be repaired with great effort, as we have not received one single spare part. The speedometer of many vehicles has gone down. These vehicles are used without speedometer. Instruments like that, which are very difficult to reach for repairs, must function with great reliability, as in operational circumstances there is no time to replace those parts.

Main gun

The gun works very well, but needs many repairs. The rifling in the barrel breaks for unknown reasons and the installation that throws the empty case out does not work. The cases often have to be removed with hammer and chisel. Cross-country drives with a gun that is not fastened results in a moving gun (both horizontally and vertically), with a deflection of up to 20 cm at the muzzle. The gun's aiming devices often jam due to the high temperature rise within inside the vehicle. After a short period of operations the gun has to be calibrated again. The forward barrel support has been shot off in some cases. An accurate report has been given to the commander of Abteilung 653 by Stabsfeldwebel Br. to be forwarded.

Dear General Hartmann! I have taken the freedom to give you a short report about the use of our Ferdinands. On our first day of battle casemates, infantry, artillery and anti tank defences were attacked with great succes. Our guns have been in a barrage for three ours and they have proven their protection against artillery fire! On the evening of the first day some tanks were destroyed, while the others fled. The crews of the artillery and anti tank guns fled for our guns, after repeated fire. In the first combat 120 tanks were destroyed by our Abteilung, as well as many artillery batteries, anti tank guns and casemates. In the first days our losses numbered 60 v.H., most of them due to mines, the area was extensively mined and the mine dogs were insufficient. Unfortunately, we also drove into a minefield of our own forces. We had to work really hard, but succeeded in the end of the day.

Inspector-general Guderial was with us too. The Russians have many more weapons nowadays, and the quality of the weapons has improved considerable! He has got artillery as never before, they even shoot on single soldiers! There are also many AT-guns and the performance of these AT-guns is very good (with one Ferd. I counted 55 shots before the gun's end). In the first operation we had 6 total losses, one of them was, while in our rest positions, by chance hit in open driver doors. 1 dead, 3 wounded, the vehicle burnt. One vehicle burnt (cause unknown, probably a leaking exhaust pipe). One vehicle burnt (generator), as it had to drive through a bog. 3 pieces had to be blown up when the enemy counterattacked, as they could not be moved due to mine damage. One had bad luck, it stood on the railroad dike when a Pz.Kpfw.III on the other side got a direct hit and was smashed onto the Ferdinand. The gun was destroyed, as well as the aiming device and the welds of the superstructure. In the other Abteilung the roof was hit through by a heavy grenade.

In the second operation in the defence east of O... we had beter results with only two total losses (one destroyed by ourselves). One gun shot 22 tanks in a short time, the general number of enemy tanks destroyed is rather high and the Ferdinands were a substantial part in the defence, as they have been before in the breakthrough. One gun destroyed 7 out of 9 attacking American tanks. The gun is very good, every tank, including KW II and the American one, is tanken out with one or two shots. But with HE grenades often the loading system jams (the shells get stuck), which often has been very painful. One barrel was shot at and damaged, two were damaged already, they have been exchanged with barrels from damaged vehicles. Parts have been taken from damaged vehicles, as they have all been brought back by us. A protection plate is mounted over the weld, as I have proposed already, as the Russians use Phosforous grenades.

The Ferdinand has proven itself, here it has been decisive and nowadays one can not counter the enemy masses of tanks without a weapon like this. Sturmgeschütze are insufficient. The electrical traction has proven itself to the full, the drivers and crews have been surprised in a positive way. There are few damages to engine and electrical installation. The engine has too little power for the mass of the vehicle, the tracks are a bit small. If the vehicle is improved after these experiences, it would be >>fine< One Ferdinand's superstructure was - accidentaly - shot through by a Pz.Kpfw.IV, gun fire or an AT-gun destroyed a return roller. A body was shot through in the lower part by a T34 at 400 m (7 T34s encircled the Ferd.), but the shell fell into it without causing any damage. A Ferdinand, standing at an outpost at night, was made immobile and blind by infantry weapons and finally fell into a ditch. A machine gun for such cases fails. The side windows are too small, one cannot see the corn.

It is a big mistake that the enemy guns and tanks are left standing in the field, instead of being recovered or destroyed by a special recovery or destruction group. When for instance 45 tanks are standing in no man's land in the evening, 20 or so will be missing the next morning, as, at night, they have been recovered by the Russians with their tractors. The tanks that were shot last summer fell back into Russian hands in the winter! In a few weeks probably 50 of them are operational again and we wonder how they get that many tanks, as that costs labour and blood. In our first operation for instance, damaged Russian tanks were left standing, as well as their guns and AT-pieces, partly intact and with ammunition, the mines were stored. The front had to be taken back and everything fell back into Russian hands.

Here the story was the same, the American tanks were all left standing in the field. We should try to recover these items as war materials (as we have troubles in obtaining these materials), thousands of tons could be brought in this way, and the enemy is denied the chance of replacing his losses with repaired vehicles. There are scrapyards already, but these can be used more extensively, empty train waggons often are standing at stations for long times, they can be loaded in the meantime. I have heard that our Abteilung's damaged Ferdinands should have been recovered. They came a bit late and they are too few, we need more of them, I hope the new type will be ready for production soon. I have not succeeded in finding a place.

I am doing well and I hope that Herr General is fine again.

战史

一九四三年四月一日，在奥地利的布鲁克训练场，德国国防军第六五三重驱逐坦克大队〔营〕正式成立，它的前身是第一九七突击炮营。它夺目的光辉在第一次走上战场就达到了顶峰。但第三帝国不断没落的局势无法支持这样一支豪华的部队。他们被一次又一次肢解，出现在撤退友军的身后。在它令人眩晕的战绩上覆盖的是一个又一个失败战役的黯然。他们留下的只有支离破碎的记录，我们不得不凭借枯燥的数字去回想这支钢铁巨兽。不过尽管如此，仅仅是这些数字也足够让人们体会德国歼击车部队的恐怖。

第六五三营是仅有的两个装备了“菲迪南”歼击车的部队之一，也是仅有的装备“象式”的部队——改名以后的数量只够一个营了。经过最初的训练，五月二十四～二十五日该营在训练场接受了古德里安的视察。鉴于它可怕的火力和装甲，同时在四十二公里公路测试中所有车辆没有任何故障的表现，古德里安乐观地送走了这支部队。

六月八日，第六五三营正式与姐妹营第六五四和装备“灰熊”突击炮的第二一六营组成第六五六歼击车团，次日起程开付东线。十二日全团抵达前线，配属于第九集团军属下的第四十一装甲军〔XXXXI. Panzerkorps〕。六五三营被部署于奥勒尔，全营编制为四十五辆“菲迪南”重型坦克歼击车，三个连每连十四辆，营部三辆。但不知什么原因最后营部没有得到“菲迪南”，那三辆都给了三连。同时该营也拥有相应的支援车辆，包括三号弹药车、牵引车、摩托车、输送掷弹兵的半履带车等。

很遗憾我无法确切指出第六五三营参战的时间和地点。但肯定的是七月五日它就参与了进攻，并且也是打头阵。但它比第六五四营走运一些。进攻刚刚开始的时候就得到了第三一四装甲连的遥控扫雷坦克的支援。但这支部队在苏军炮火的打击下没能完全完成任务，还是有一些“菲迪南”触雷失去行动力。并且由于缺少支援，苏联步兵的反坦克阵地不停地制造麻烦。第六五三营只前进了几英里就奉命转入防御。

对于著名的波捏里战斗，我手头的资料显示第六五三营没有参加。那场战斗对第六五四营是场灾难。实际上这种超豪华、完全专业的坦克歼击车被错误地作为突击炮使用，当成了攻击敌人的先锋。而且，苏联松软的野地显然和德国的道路有区别，一些“菲迪南”出现了机械故障，并无法及时修理。

第六五三营的光辉时刻出现在德国人的进攻失败以后。七月十一日，苏军发动了意图歼灭奥勒尔突出部内德军的反击。第六五三营被分成小份提前部署在防线不同地段上，作为反坦克炮使用。事实证明，这才是、至少比较接近，重型坦克歼击车的正确战法。

很遗憾我总是无法了解战斗的细节，只知道在苏联人进攻的初期就被第六五三营狠揍了一顿。七月十四日有一个车组报告了二十二辆坦克的战绩。掩护友军撤退的任务一直持续到七月二十七日，此时库尔斯克北方的战线终于稳定了下来。

下面是令人目眩的战果：

从七月五日至七月二十七日，第六五三营共取得三百二十辆坦克和大量反坦克炮以及其他车辆的战绩，而用久性损失的“菲迪南”为十三辆。别忘了，他们一直在最前沿奋战。而他们的兄弟第六五四营则要惨得多，战绩一般，并且最后只剩下十九辆“菲迪南”。八月初，第六五四营奉命将其余的“菲迪南”交给第六五三营，而第六五三营业于八月二十五日回到后方修整。主要是修理“菲迪南”。

此时第六五三营拥有五十辆“菲迪南”〔库尔斯克战役前共有四十四辆，不知道为什么少一辆，加上第六五四营的十九辆，减去损失的十三辆〕，所有都需要修理。他们最初撤到 Dnepropetrovsk，但九月中旬由于苏军的威胁不得不撤过第捏伯河到了 Nikopol。随即，在九月十九日该营被命令带上所有可以使用的菲迪南在此渡过第捏伯河参与 Zaporozhye 桥头堡的防守。共有十四辆“菲迪南”参与了这次行动，到十月十五日才撤走。

战斗还没有完，在第涅伯河西岸，第六五三营再次被分成很多小组参与防守。到十一月五日，战绩如下：

到了十一月二十六日，战绩增加到了六百五十四辆坦克和六百一十门各种炮，永久损失增加了四辆。但能够开动的已经很少了。有几辆需要短期修理，近三十辆需要比较长时间的修理。一下是截止此时第六五三营“菲迪南”的战损记录〔一九四三年六月三十日至十一月三十日〕：

此后，第六五三营奉命撤回德国，对“菲迪南”进行改装。然而为抵挡苏联人不断的进攻该营经常被截留，直到次年一月十日，希特勒下令将该营调往意大利时，最后一批“菲迪南”还在东线的战场上奋战。

回到德国的“菲迪南”加装了机枪，改装了发动机隔板——前线的报告说有榴弹击中这个部位并起火的事情，还加装了一个指挥塔。一九四四年二月一日，改装完毕的十一辆“菲迪南”组成第二一六突击炮营一连〔这个营的“灰熊”的损失也无法补充。德国装甲兵真可怜〕派往意大利。

出现在意大利的菲迪南很快被转给了第五○八老虎营，参与了试图将盟军赶下海的反击，失败后再次作为最后的堡垒掩护撤退。战绩不详，但很多资料表明他们给盟军装甲兵留下了可怕的记忆。进攻中有两辆陷在松软的滩头被乘员破坏，还有少量被飞机击毁。剩余的被拉回德国修理。

第六五三营其他两个连在三月底得到了改装完毕的“菲迪南”，装备完毕，仍作为第六五三营，于四月二日派往东线。

再次回到前线，第六五三营首先参与了对波兰东南部被围德军的解围。同他们参加的其他战役一样，这次又失败了。四月十八日解围行动取消。在这次作战中，第六五三营没有很显赫的战绩，有三辆的损失。主要是当地潮湿松软的土地限制了“菲迪南”的发挥。四月的剩余日子里第六五三营自力更生改装了一些辅助设备，包括将两辆缴获的Ｔ－３４改为弹药输送车，给一辆“豹式”抢修车安装固定的四号坦克Ｈ型的炮塔改装为突击炮，还在另一辆“豹式”抢修车和一辆缴获的Ｔ－３４上改装了四联装二十毫米高射炮。同时，在波尔舍ＶＫ４５０１“虎式”底盘上发展的指挥车以及剩余的经过改装和修理的“菲迪南”陆续运到，五月一日，“菲迪南”被正式改名为“象式”。

这一段战线比较平静，直到七月十三日苏联人再次发起进攻。此时德国的北乌克兰军群只能切战且退。第六五三营再次做起老本行，在队伍的最后阻击敌人的装甲矛头。他们又增加了据称一百辆以上的战绩，但缺乏证据。同时，人员的损失非常轻微，只有五人阵亡，二十多人受伤或生病，十一人失踪。而武器的损失很惨重，共有十九辆“象式”被放弃，因为被通知没有时间加固桥梁供他们撤退，也没有掩护的部队，因此该营官兵只好放弃每一辆走不动的“象式”。另外仅有的两辆修理车和那辆指挥车也失去了。

九月，经过了在克拉考的休整，第六五三营得到命令，二连保留剩余的“象式”继续留在东线，其他人回到德国，准备换装“猎虎”。

二连被配属第四装甲军，在十二月十五日被重新命名为第六一四装甲歼击连。在苏联发动的维斯瓦－奥德河战役中该连遭到重创，到一月底只剩下四辆“象式”并且都需要修理。这次他们被撤回柏林，直到二站结束也只有两辆修理好，于五月一日在柏林的巷战中被苏军俘获。

第六五三营得到了补充后前往德国进行“猎虎”的训练。但生产十分缓慢，直到一九四四年十二月初只有一连装备完毕。十二月七日，该连奉命前往西线参加阿登战役。但他们的“猎虎”由于铁路遭到轰炸根本没能及时到达集结地点，因而只能参加定在新年的进攻。这还是通过履带行军进行的集结，其中有几辆发生故障，又由于与附属的保障部队脱节了一阵，好长时间才修好。

此时三连也形成了战斗力，与一连一起奉命参加北风行动。

由于交通和组织的问题，第六五三营各部以两、三辆的规模分别到了不同的地方，被拆散编入了不同的部队。战绩不详，但损失不大，到了二月底重新集结的时候只少了六辆猎虎〔原有四十五辆〕，其他车辆反而有所增加。三月份第六五三营武器装备情况如下：

此时的第六五三营的境况已经很凄凉了，尽管还有几十辆“猎虎”，但由于缺乏其他部队的协同而经常处境艰难。

美军于三月中旬发起进攻，第六五三营再次被要求掩护撤退。在狠狠揍了美国人一顿后，他们集中了所有燃料冒着空袭后撤。这期间有五辆“猎虎”被空袭摧毁，还有两辆因机械故障被放弃。此后他们又跟美军发生了一些小规模战斗，到三月三十日又有四辆损失，两辆机械故障，一辆在战斗中履带受伤被承员破坏，一辆在二百米的距离被击中侧装甲。而到四月十七日只剩十七辆了。其中有十二辆在修理。

第六五三营在他们的第六一四连弟兄被苏联人消灭的同一天，一九四五年五月一日溜过苏军防区向美军投降。期间未发一弹。

第六五三营是德军唯一一个自始至终满员装备威力最大的重型坦克歼击车的部队。这样的重型歼击部队，实际上德军中很少，只能在局部完成一些战术任务。大多数部队里的反坦克主力还是坦克本身和“黄鼠狼”、三号突击炮系列、四号坦克歼击车等。
