After the initial attack in April 1940, the German retained two divisions in Denmark: 198. Infanterie Divison at Copenhagen and 170. Infanterie Division at Jutland. The following excerpt describes the arrivals and departures of units:

- Division Nr. 160 arrived in Denmark mid May 1940 and on 1 June 1940 took responsibility for Jutland from the 170th which left for the west on 28 May 1940. Also on that date the 198th left for Saarbrucken in Germany.

- On 31 July 1940 the 269. Infanterie Division arrived to take up occupation duties. It remained until 12 March 1941 when it left for East Prussia. It was replaced on 5 April by the 218. Infanterie Division which had arrived from Germany.

- In June 1941 the command in Denmark was designated Befehlshaber der deutschen truppen in Danemark (Commander of German Troops in Denmark).

- In January 1942, the 416th Infantry Division was moved from Germany to Denmark for occupation duty. It consisted mainly of older soldiers, with an average age of thirty-eight and was nicknamed the "Whipped Cream Division," because of the special diets many of its men required.

- On 23 October 1942 the 23rd Infantry Division was reformed in Denmark with those portions not used to form the 26th Panzer Division. It was sent into action on the Eastern Front in February 1943 and fought on the northern sector.

- The first units of Division Nr. 166 arrived at Copenhagen from Germany on 23 January 1943. As of 31 January 1943 they took responsibility for Zealand after the 160 who was then moved to the southern part of Jutland again.

- In March 1943, the 20th Luftwaffe Field Division moved to Aalborg. It was taken over by the Army on 1 November 1943 as 20. Feld-Division (L). On June 1, 1944 it was renamed the 20th Luftwaffe "Sturm" Division. In July 1944 it was joined by the remnants of the disbanded 19th Luftwaffe "Sturm" Division. On 28 November 1944 the division was ordered disbanded and its infantry sent to the 26th Panzer Division.

- In April 1943 the 71st Infantry Division was formed in Denmark. It was rebuilt around the former unit which had surrendered at Stalingrad. Its commander throughout its existence was Major General (later Lieutenant General) Wilhelm Raapke. It was sent to Istria, Slovenia for garrison duty in August 1943.

- In late August 1943 the 25th Panzer Division sailed from Oslo to Copenhagen, where it participated in the operation to disarm the Danish Army on August 28, 1943. In September 1943 the division was sent to France for further refitting and in October was reassigned to defensive positions on the eastern front, southwest of Kiev. It returned in May 1944 for refitting and left for the east again in September 1944.

- Also in August 1943, the 233rd Reserve Panzer Division was formed on 10 August 1943 and was transferred to Denmark. The order of 5 February 1945 the division provided the basic units for the new Holstein Panzer Division.

It was brought up to strength again and in April 1945 was redesignated from a reserve division to the 233rd Panzer Division.

- In September 1943 the 181st Infantry Division passed through Aalborg, Aarhus and Copenhagen on its way to Germany.

- On 26 October 1943 Division Nr. 166 was redesignated the 166th Reserve Division. In early 1944 it was transferred to the Lemvig area on the Jutland peninsula and remained there until the Western Front began to disintegrate in early 1945.

- On 7 November 1943 Division Nr. 160 was redesignated the 160th Reserve Division.

- The 361. Infanterie Division was formed on 25 November 1943 as part of the 21st Wave. The division was sent to the Russian Front in March 1944. - In December the overall command in Denmark was upgraded to Wehrmachtbefehlshaber Denmark (Armed Forces Commander, Denmark).

- In May 1944 the 363rd Infantry Division was sent to Denmark from Poland to form. It only stayed a month and in late June it was sent to Belgium.

- As of June 1, 1944 there were under Wehrmachtbefehlshaber Danemark were as follows: 416th Infantry stationed at Aalborg, 25th Panzer (refitting) at Hobro, 233rd Reserve Panzer at Horsens, 160th Reserve at Henne, 166th Reserve at Lemvig, 363rd Infantry (forming) at Holsted and OFK 398 (Hoherer Kommando Kopenhagen) at Copenhagen.

- Orginally designated the Division "Jutland", the 19th Volksgrenadier Division was formed in August 1944 at Oxbol, Denmark. It included survivors of the 19th Luftwaffe Field Division, which had been smashed on the Western Front in July. By September 1944 the 19th was with Army Group B in France.

- In early September 1944 the 416th Infantry Division was earmarked for the seizure and occupation of the Aland Islands in the Baltic Sea, south of the Gulf of Bothnia, between Finland and Sweden; however, the orders were cancelled by Hitler, who decided that the 416th could not be spared. - On 4 October 1944 the division was sent to the Western front.

- In October 1944, the 47th Volksgrenadier Division was formed. It was sent to the western front in December 1944 in time for the Battle of the Bulge.

- The 614th Division z.b.V. (for special purposes) was formed on 20 January 1945 in Denmark as the tactical and territorial commanding staff. Until 14 February 1945 it was known as Nordjutland Divisional Staff. The order of 9 March 1945 converted it into the 324th "Jutland" Division.

- Also in January 1945 the 2nd Mountain Division was sent to Denmark, and after resting and regrouping, was posted to fight on the Western Front. (It left Norway 9 Jan 1945 and arrived in Heeresgruppe G on the western front on 9 February 1945).

- The Holstein Panzer Division was formed on 10 February 1945 by the mobilization of the 233rd Reserve Panzer Division. The division and the Schlesien Panzer Division were merged on 26 March 1945 to reform the 18th Panzer Grenadier Division. On 6th April 1945 the division's staff was used to rebuild the Clauswitz Panzer Division.

- The 325th Infantry Division 'Jutland' was formed on 9 March 1945 in Aalborg, Denmark. The division may have been redesignated the 325th Shadow Division on 12 April 1945. It continued to be formed through May.
