French plans to create new modern infantry support tanks after WW1 leads to the development of the Renault D1, it is the direct following of the Renault FT17 and NC tanks. 10 prototypes are ordered in 1929. 150 tanks are delivered between 1932 and 1935. They are at first equipped with the Schneider ST-1 prototype turret but standard models are fitted with the ST-2 model in 1933 (all the D1s have the ST-2 turret in 1936). They are intensively used fot training and to study and develop the doctrine of the French light tanks (infantry support) … at a point that in 1934, 17 tanks are exhausted and 62 under repair. All the D1 tanks had a radio set (ER52 or ER52bis) with an amazing triangular shaped aerial behind the turret. It was armed with a 47mm SA34 gun, a coaxial and a 'bow' 7.5mm MAC31 MG (fixed). The Cletrac transmission provides both braking and steering. Judged as obsolete these 3 battalions (135 tanks) are all sent to North Africa in 1938-1939 to face eventually the Italians troops.

In June 1940, the 67e BCC, equipped with D1 tanks, is transported from Tunisia to France. This battalion (45 tanks) faces the 8.Panzerdivision (212 tanks – but in fact mainly the 67.Panzer-Abteilung) on 12 June 1940 during the battle of Souain in a sacrificial mission during one of the the last "large" tank battles of the campaign. The defense of Souain, Suippes and la Croix en Champagne will seal the fate of the D1 tanks in France, where their crew will fight without failing their duty. Fighting 1 vs 4 and sometimes locally 1 vs 10 against a German armored division with numerous Panzer 38(t)s, the different French companies will delay the German armored forces enough to enable the escape of the 6e DIC (colonial infantry division). Nonetheless, the 3 French companies will lose most of their tanks either because of enemy fire, breakdowns and most of the time because of empty fuel tanks.

The report of caporal Maurice Antoine is much telling about the short but sharp battle: … When the platoon leader tank begins its turn, a shot unhinges the hatch and explodes in the hull. Caporal René Leyre (radio operator) and chasseur Henri Pelladez are both KIA. Lieutenant Dechery is compelled to lie down on their corpses to steer the tank and bring it back to the rally point. Sous-lieutenant Oudet is KIA by a blast when he is about to be evacuated after his tank began to burn and the death of his radio operator, chasseur René Pecquart. The struggle goes on with the fit tanks. The German tanks go back to the west under the powerful stroke of the French 47mm guns. They disappear, enabling the II/5e RICMS (régiment d'infanterie coloniale mixte sénégalais - includes one or more Senegalese battalion beside the European ones) to escape. At Souain, lieutenant Hildesheimer, commanding the strong point, kept fighting up to his death, not far from the church, alongside 3 officers and about 30 Senegalese tirailleurs. The 4th platoon (3 tanks) of lieutenant Larger, that had still all its tanks, remains in support near the village. The others, at the rallying point, keep on firing. This goes on until the enemy is no more active. The French artillery fires then a dense barrage on the village and its surroundings. Capitaine Blanc visits on foot the 4th platoon. This is when the German tanks, that moved South-East around Souain, come into sight. The 4th platoon engaged then immediately and disable several. The other German tanks retreat quickly. Once all is calm, the capitaine orders the 3 tanks of the platoon to rejoin the battalion at the rallying point. The bodies of sous-lieutenant Paul Oudet, caporal René Leyre, chasseur René Pecquard and chasseur Henri Pelladez are laid down near the American WWI cimetery because they cannot be brought with us. The corps of sous-lieutenant René Murracciole is left inside his tank. Facing them, 15 German tanks remain knocked out and some German soldiers are lying still in the gathering dusk on the battlefield. Last, on orders from capitaine Blanc, the 8 still completely operational tanks, each overloaded with soldiers of the 67e BCC and Senegalese troops from the 5e RICMS, pass through the woods and head to Perthes-les-Hurlus 1,500 meters East of our former positions, just when the German artillery begins to hammer them with a powerful barrage." Judging by the reports of battalion commander Valleteau and his officers, the Renaut D1 tanks, despite being obsolete and fighting against more numerous enemies, fought well against the German tanks and anti-tank guns, their radio sets often turning to the German channel broadcasting in clear ! Thus the 67e BCC managed to fulfil its sacrificial mission without failure as the losses attest. From the 45 D1 tanks engaged on 12 June, all are finally lost, abandoned or scuttled on 3 July 1940.

The other available Renault D1 tanks of the French Army remained in Tunisia in the 61e and 65e BCC. After the armistice they are issued to the 2e, 5e and 7e Regiment de Chasseurs d'Afrique (RCA) and in November 1942 they saw shortly action against the US troops. After that, about 45 of them were used against Axis troops in Tunisia in 1942-1943.
