Lawless adventurer;from boucan;a term for purveyors of dried meat.Also applied to French settlers who are the meat and later to the English and Dutch who hunted the French settlers.

2,Burning your boats:

To leave no alternative; used since Roman times when destroying troop transport ships gave recently landed soldiers no choice but to stay and fight.

3,By and large:

Describing both bad and good sailing conditions: bad headwinds required sailing "by" the wind; favorable winds allowed use of the "large" sails, resulting in greater speed.

4,Chew the fat:

To talk endlessly; from the fact that shipboard preservatives hardened meat,forcing sailors to chew it thoroughly.

5,Chock-A-Block:

Full to capacity;from the condition of two nautical pulleys,or "blocks" that are "chocked", or pulled as tight as possible.

6,Chowder:

A seafood soup;from the French chaudiere, or cauldron.

7, The coast is clear:

Safe to proceed; applied to vessels having "cleared" the hazards of a dangerous passage.

8,Dogsbody:

Person of low status;from the term for an unpopular ship's dish composed of various leftovers.

9,(In the)Doldrums

State of depression or stagnation; term for the belt of calm or windless waters between the trade winds of the northern and southern hemispheres.

10,Donkey Work

Drudge work;from the heavy lifting done by a "donkey" engine, an auxiliary nautical steam engine.

11,Embark

To go aboard a ship; from the Spanish embarcar.

12,Even Keel

State of normality; derived from the condition of a ship having her keel perfectly horizontal in the water;(erroneously formulated, however,due to the fact that a ship with a truly "even keel" is nearly impossible to steer).

13,Get off my back

A plea to be left alone; from the passage in Sinbad the Sailor in which the Old Man of the Sea climbs on Sinbad's back and refuses to leave- until he's plied with drink.

14,Hard up

Unable to proceed; originally; "Hard up in a clinch with no knife to cut the seizing," referring to any movement which has become "chocked" or stopped.

15,Heavy weather

Unneccessary hard work; from a ship laboring through heavy seas.

16,Miss the boat

To miss an opportunity; from sailors missing the liberty boat which carried them to or from shore leave.

17,Money for old rope

Easy money; from the practice of selling a ship's old, used rope rigging to traders and splitting the proceeds among the crew.

18,Monkey jacket

A close-fitting sailor's jacket; from the fact it was cut so as to leave the legs free for climbing.

19, Out of the blue

Totally unexpected; short for "out of a clear blue sky", referring to a sudden change in the weather.

20,Over a barrel

Obstructed or trapped; from the Royal Navy practice of tying men to be flogged over the barrel of a cannon.

21,Slush fund

A secret supply of something; from "slush",the coveted fat skimmed off shipboard meat barrels; the fat was hidden away by cooks who later sold it on shore, and pilfered by crewmen who used it to grease masts to facilitate hoisting of sails.

22,Snub

Cut short; to "snub" a ship is to quickly stop her progress.
